The battle of these two pursuits will never be reconciled this side of eternity, but nonetheless, a debate worth delving into.
Let’s look at the two camps of thought as it relates to our lives and ultimately our journey called life. First is success. Who doesn’t want to be successful? I mean everywhere your eye gate takes you, the message is grow your business and make that first million; join my team and you will know what a successful real estate agent looks like; invest with me and I will make you a millionaire. We are told from a young age that being successful is an end all game. The more success you achieve, the more fulfilled you will be. The thinking seems to always revolve around achieving something that others deem as highly valuable. When that product or position is acquired, success has been achieved. You are now on the mountain of success and can fast track to that life of luxury that you have always dreamed of. So what is the problem?
Success does not always equate to joy, happiness or fulfillment. Actually it often leads to fear, doubt and a questioning of, is this all life has to offer me? Culturally successful people will tell you that the ups and downs that come with this pursuit can lead one to a small 5×5 padded cell, where you find the person rocking back and forth, muttering words and phrases that make no earthly sense.
So success isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but is not the end all to a happy, healthy and fulfilled life.
Let’s now look at the other camp of popular thought, significance. This is the pursuit of living a life that values life not as a destination, but a journey. To live a significant life, is to live life with purpose, focused not on achievement, but relationship and living out of design.
You, and everyone else on the planet, were created with and for a purpose. That design is unique to you and only you can live it out. You have a purpose and specific design, now live it out.
If you are clueless to your destiny or unique purpose in this world, please know that you are not alone. Millions across our little globe are pursuing careers and other ambitions that will never bring the satisfaction they so desperately desire.
